App Usage in India is growing at 43%, Music and Video Apps on Top: Flurry Analytics

Yahoo-owned analytics app, Flurry on Thursday unveiled the findings for ‘State of the App Nation in India’ - a study about app activity and usage, emerging app categories and device adoption trends in India. The study revealed an astonishing fact that India’s app usage is growing at a faster pace of 43% and app categories like music, video, and finance are whopping the app market.



The ‘State of the App Nation in India’ study was a round up of huge data collected over 940,000 apps, across 2.1 billion devices at a global level and 58,000 apps from 147 million devices from India. It is evident that smartphones are  “Going back to India’s six-month mobile trend delay, there’s no better time for local developers to innovate, and lessen or possibly stop a local industry pause. We are excited to see what app developers do in the next decade and watch which industry they chose to disrupt, again,” said Flurry Director, Christopher Klotzbach,  while presenting the study in Bangalore.

Here are the key insight and app trends from the study.


Phablet Revolution: Asia and India are leading the phablet revolution. Indians have become a big time fan of phablets (devices with 5.3–6.99 inches of screen size) and indeed, it is the fastest growing device at a global level. In India, Phablets hold an impressive market share of 61%, outperforming the US market share of 48 percent.

Diversification of Apps: In India, the topmost growing app categories is Music, Media and Entertainment, followed by Business & Finance apps, and Utilities & Productivity apps.

  • Music, Media and Entertainment had the biggest usage increase at 188 percent YOY.
  • Business & Finance apps grew 177 percent YOY.
  • Utilities & Productivity apps grew at 99 percent YOY.


In addition, the study reports that Messaging & social apps still remains the most engaging app category which increased at 52 percent YOY.  Health & Fitness apps saw a huge increase at 27 percent YOY which had the higher rate of user hourly engagement per day. On the other hand, gamings app declined to 4% globally but made a small growth of 8% in India. Personalization apps are also a part of the declining crowd.



Mobile Prime Time at Night: The study also reports that Indian were night owls, most of them were online around 9 PM and their choice of preference of mobile are way diverse than the united States. Samsung holds the biggest part of the market share of 40%, while Micromax, Redmi, Lenevo and Motorola shares a decent market share with other mobile makers.
