Facebook Messenger Adds Live Location Sharing

Facebook on Monday has announced that it is rolling out a live location sharing feature for its own app - Messenger. The new feature allows the user to share the location with friends and family an hour at a time.

With the latest update, you can find a location icon at the bottom of the messenger chat and the option to share your location. If you choose to share your location, your friend/family can track where you are on a map for the next 60 minutes. You can also stop sharing your location by simply tapping ‘stop sharing’.

This new feature is expected to compete with likes of tools developed by the Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc - Google Maps. “People tell us that Live Location is helpful when trying to coordinate with friends, telling people how close you are when you’re on your way to an appointment, or even sharing where you are with your roommate when you’re on your way home at night,” said in the Facebook blogspot.

"It happens to be what people are saying, what they're interested in the most," said Stan Chudnovsky, head of product for Messenger, said in an interview with Thomson Reuters.

In addition, the feature incorporated a clock in the lower right side of the map to show how much longer you’re sharing your location for.  It is also possible to add a static location. For example, you can pin a location and share it to your friends and family. To do so, open the location map and tap the red pin in the upper right-hand corner.

The social network is currently rolling out the feature globally and is available on both Apple and Android.
