Facebook 360: The Social Network’s First-Ever Dedicated VR App

Facebook on Wednesday launched its first-ever dedicated virtual reality app - Facebook 360 to make sure its users find and enjoy 360-degree photos and videos. While the novelty of 360-degree images picking up its pace, it’s the Facebook which initiated exploring the changing landscape of VR more vibrantly. But one caveat is that the app is currently available only for the Samsung Gear VR headset powered by Oculus.

One major difference between the normal Facebook app and Facebook 360 app is that Facebook 360 won’t let you browse images and photos via news Feed. A dedicated feed of four different sections is created to help users browse across the content available on the social network. The four different feeds are Explore, Following, Saved, and Timeline.

  • Explore feed allows you to browse popular content posted by media companies, individual creators, and organizations across the world.

  • Following feed will contain the 360-images and videos posted by your friends and the people and pages you follow on Facebook.

  • Saved feed will contain the videos which you’ve saved for later viewing.

  • Timeline feed allows the users to browse across 360-degree content posted by themselves on their Facebook timeline.

“With more than 25 million 360 photos and more than 1 million 360 videos posted on Facebook to date, there’s plenty of great content to discover in Facebook 360,” said Brent Ayrey, Product Director, and Christopher Wong, Software Engineer. In the Facebook 360 app, users can react to the 360-degree images and videos and enable them to share it on their timeline.

To download the Facebook 360 app for gear VR headset, users can open the oculus app on their gear VR-compatible Samsung device and search for it. Or simply, go to the Oculus website to download the app.

The news post added: “We look forward to seeing how people use the app to connect with the people and things they care about, and we’ll continue to improve the experience and hope to bring it to more platforms over time,”.
