YouTube Go: An ‘Offine-First’ App in India


Alphabet Inc’s Google on Tuesday announced that it will roll out a video mobile application called ‘YouTube Go’ for India, enabling the users to view videos even in regions with a spotty network connection.


The new app is a redesigned version of Google’s video app - YouTube with a view on low data consumption. Announced in the last September, YouTube Go is now officially released in India for Android users.



Since its announcement, Google had intensive experiments of YouTube Go to allow the users to save videos for offline watch and monitor the data usage.

YouTube Go was designed to be the ‘offline-first’ app in India, meaning that users can stream and watch videos on slower/ poor network of internet connectivity. The app provides relevant recommended videos based on the preference of the user.

One of the coolest features of YouTube Go is the ability to control the streaming the option which allows the users to download the videos at different resolutions. It also provides a quick preview of the video before downloading or streaming the video.

In addition, with the new app, you can share a saved video to your nearby friends without an internet connection.

“While the app is in its beta release, we’ll continue to listen to your feedback and improve the app before launching more broadly,” reported in the YouTube blog spot. There is no announcement about rolling out the new app outside India.

The beat version of the YouTube Go app is available on Google Play store for Android users.
